Horse Leasing at HHIA is done for a variety of reasons:
Leases help keep a horse's activity levels at a healthy level, avoiding over-use and under-use.
Horses are social animals and, unless they've been through a severe physical and/or emotional trauma they often like consistent close relationships with multiple people.
Leases begin to introduce a student to the horse care side of horse ownership. The care to riding ratio for a healthy horse is approximately 3:1.
Leases help to cover a horse's costs, making it possible to provide a higher level of emergency care in the long run.
Horse Leasing Policies:

Holistic Horsemanship Institute of America™ may schedule horse care as needed, regardless of days leasing. This includes, but is not limited to hoof trimming, vet care, dental care and chiropractic care. Scheduled times for these will be sent out with the monthly calendar.
If a horse a lessee wants to lease is not available, they may have the option to switch leasing to that horse if it becomes available. Make sure Holistic Horsemanship Institute of America™ knows of your interest in another horse!
People who are not students of Holistic Horsemanship Institute of America™ (friends or family, for example) are not permitted to ride or handle a leased horse for liability reasons.
There are no cancellations or reschedules for any reason for leases. Part of owning or leasing a horse includes having to take days off due to weather, illness, or schedule conflicts. If a leased horse becomes sick or injured another horse will be assigned temporarily.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Why aren't there full leases? Horses are only half leased in order to allow for a second lessee and to allow Holistic Horsemanship Institute a better ability to track the horse's health; both physically and emotionally.
Can I feed the horse I lease? Horse feeding of grain and supplements is handled by Holistic Horsemanship Institute of America™ and not by anyone leasing a horse in order to prevent miscommunication about who should feed the horses.
How does riding during mealtimes work? A horse needs 1 hour after feeding to digest food before it may be ridden. If you plan to ride during or soon after a meal, please coordinate with Lisa. You may ride during a meal if you plan to stay with your horse during feeding afterwards.
What if my horse gets injured? Any first aid or medical care required will be handled by Holistic Horsemanship Institute of America™. Long term care, such as wound cleaning, may be coordinated so the lessee may participate on their leased days.
