SummerHorsemanship &Conservation School

Responsible horsemanship extends beyond riding skills. It includes ethical, lifelong care of horses and thoughtful stewardship of the land that supports them.

Through hands-on work with horses, senior animals, and complementary livestock,

participants learn how animal management, land health, and climate resilience are deeply connected — and how responsible choices today shape the sustainability of farms for the future.

Program Focus

This program explores how responsible animal care, senior horse management, and

land stewardship are deeply connected — especially as resources become more limited and climate conditions change.

Participants gain real skills, real understanding, real responsibility and receive guided instruction and supervised practice in:

Horsemanship & Horse Care

  • Mounted riding instruction (skill-grouped)
  • Horse handling, safety, and communication
  • Grooming, tack knowledge, and daily care routines
  • Stable and barn management
  • Horse behavior and applied horsemanship problem-solving

Senior Horse Care & Education

  • Understanding the changing needs of aging horses
  • Supporting senior horses through appropriate workload, care, and management
  • Nutrition, body condition, and comfort considerations for older horses
  • Soundness, mobility, and quality-of-life awareness
  • Ethical responsibility of lifelong horse ownership
  • Adapting horsemanship practices as horses age

Our herd is aging, and we are continually refining how we support senior horses in

healthy, thoughtful, and sustainable ways. Participants learn what it means to care for

horses not just when they are young and athletic, but throughout their entire lives.

Land Stewardship & Conservation

  • Pasture management and grazing strategies
  • Land stewardship through multi-species management, including:

                     Horses

                     Goats

                     Sheep

                     Potbelly pigs

                     Chickens

  • Understanding how each species serves a specific purpose in land care
  • Soil health, manure management, and composting
  • Water movement, erosion control, and habitat awareness
  • Transforming land to perform better in a changing climate
  • Stewardship decisions driven by increasing resource scarcity
  • Responsible land ownership as an extension of responsible animal care

This program emphasizes caring for animals and land as interconnected systems rather

than separate responsibilities.

Daily Structure

Each day is organized around rotating small-group learning stations to support both

mounted and unmounted skill development:

  • Riding instruction
  • Horse care and husbandry
  • Senior horse education and management discussions
  • Multi-species land stewardship and conservation activities
  • Applied horsemanship exercises and skill-building work

All activities are supervised and safety-centered.
